The Lake District National Park has some fantastically amazing walks and hikes suitable for all abilities, but sometimes you need a little bit more to do while exploring to keep everyone entertained!
Here, Bownessie has compiled a list of the fun kids activities they like to do when they’re out on a walk, needing just good old imagination and nature!

If you’re heading up to Rydal Caves, there is a fantastic plateau where many people build incredible rock balances using the surrounding stones.
This is a great challenge for those developing STEM brains, and can result in some stunning sculptures!
Don’t forget to put all your rocks back where you found them before you leave, particularly if you are creating some rock art along a trail.

Best suited for in the gorgeous villages and towns around the Lakes, this activity is a great way to explore a new place and discover those hidden gems!
Take a penny (or any coin!), and assign which side is left, and which is right. Each time you on your walk you need to make the decision of which way to turn, flip the coin and let it decide for you!
Best not to do this out on a hike or walk up in the fells, unless you are very familiar with the walks - let’s stick to the towns for now!

A classic favourite, this game never gets old even as children grow up. When crossing over a bridge over a stream or river, pick up a stick each to race!
All together, drop your sticks on the upstream side of the bridge, then dash to the other side to watch your sticks race down the water! Who’s picked the winning stick?

Ever wondered who lives in the wonderful nooks and crannies of these stunning places? Now’s the time to find out!
Gently lift stones and fallen branches to see what’s living underneath. What sorts of creatures can you spot?
Don’t forget to carefully and gently replace everything back where you found it - you don’t want to take their house away!
If it’s been raining, you might find quite a few slugs and snails around. For some added fun, snails are great to race! Be careful when picking them up, and always return them to a safe spot after their energetic race.

As a great lover of the whole of the Lake District, Bownessie often wanders far around the fells and the towns, but is quite shy of people so they’re hard to spot! Keep an eye out for Bownessie when out and about on your walks!
